A Terroir Like No Other

Located half an hour from the city of Bordeaux (45 km), on the left bank of the Garonne River, the vineyard is composed of very old vines planted on a hill and on age-old terraces looking down onto the river.
Vines have been grown in the region since ancient times and enjoy such perfect conditions here that they live for a very long time. Proof of this is to be had at CHATEAU TOUMILON, with its Semillon vines dating back to 1902 and 1932. These plants have survived the repeated onslaughts of dreadful weather conditions in the course of the 20th century.

The soil is composed of white pebbles mixed with varying quantities of sand, making it highly permeable with water draining away without forming pockets. Another beneficial property is that this is a very poor soil which therefore limits the quantity of fruit on the vines and produces juice of greater quality. On top of this, the light colour of the soil reflects the sun's rays, thus contributing to enhancing the ripening process.

Sheltered from the westerly winds by forests of pine trees, and with the Garonne River nearby exercising a moderating effect on temperatures, CHATEAU TOUMILON enjoys a particularly beneficial micro-climate. The wines produced enjoy ideal ripening conditions endowing them with quite unique structure.

• Sustainable Winegrowing Methods

At CHATEAU TOUMILON, in the vines and in the winery alike, the owners have chosen to stick to the very best of the ancestral methods - those that preserve the soil and the grapes:
Working the soil under the rows of vines, leaf-stripping and green harvesting by hand all continue to be applied at CHATEAU TOUMILON for these are techniques that have proven their worth over the years and which help to produce the truly great wines. They are combined, of course, with the benefits of modern techniques, when appropriate.

Using the information provided by the Meteorological Station in Saint Pierre de Mons, and with the support of an outside technician who makes regular visits to conduct tests and make counts of any parasites, Marie-France Sevenet-Lateyron always keeps the treatments carried out on the vines to the minimum.

The grapes are always picked by hand with a team of harvesters who are "regulars" of the Château. Over long years, and even from father to son, they have become experts in sorting the harvest of grapes out in the vineyard. Their aim is to ensure that the grapes brought into the winery are perfectly intact and free of debris. Come to CHATEAU TOUMILON at harvest time and you will hear all about first, second and final press juices, de-stemming and maceration in cold conditions, and many other such mysteries.

The winery facilities have been carefully designed to optimise quality and consistency and to ensure that the techniques applied remain environmentally friendly, in line with the current trend towards sustainable development.
